Characterization

Definition

Development

Remember:  a character is a literary construct, NOT a person!

Compo assignment:  10 to 15 character observations

Start with list on yellow "Selected Literary Features,"['B1]  then try for at least THREE of the following:

Character evidence requires reader's inference for understanding because of gaps in information (implicit)

Author creates room for interpretation by contradiction  (e.g., between what character SAYS and what s/he DOES, or what other character/s SAY, etc.)

Narrator's tone influences reader's perception of character OR tone requires inference/interpretation to make meaning

Other literary features (setting?  diction?  imagery? attributions?) contribute to characterization

See how many different strategies you can find!

Notice which strategies seem to dominate in your section!!!
