Great Gatsby Exam

This is a HANDS-ON activity in which you will put together the pieces of our analysis so far.  You will be assigned to one of these groups:  Character, Plot, Setting, or Theme.

 

Per. 5 Analysis:  The group decided that Nick is the protagonist;  his central problem is that he doesn't fit in in New York; it is a character vs. society conflict.

 

Per. 6 Analysis:  The group decided that Gatsby is the protagonist;  his central goal is to be with Daisy;  it is a character vs. fate conflict.

 

 

 

 

 

 

"Big Four Cards" (white paper)

Review the cards available for your overall "big four" category (Character, Setting, Plot, Theme).  Cut each one out individually.

 

Come to agreement on major aspects of your element:

PLOT group must all agree on same climax.

THEME group must all agree on the two themes analyzed.

SETTING group must all agree on time/place significant to whole work.

CHARACTER group must all agree on same protagonist/antagonist.

 

Distribute cards to individuals. Write answers with supporting text, but see "style stickies" before choosing -- select quotes that are feature-rich.

 

At least TWO "Big Four" cards PER PERSON

Include discussion and text evidence WITH  chapter & page #.

"Stylistic Stickies" (colored labels)

Theme and Setting groups share one set.

Review the stylistic ("close reading" features) your group has received.  You will apply these to the text evidence you choose for your big-card questions.   Annotate ALL stickies with comment/details about your stylistic observation.  Blank stickies must also be labeled with the name of the feature.  Select features for which you can find text...
