Notes on World Lit papers drawn from IBO forums for Language A1HL:

1) Ensure that the papers are double-spaced, so that they are easy to read.
2) Include your IB Candidate number on every sheet--often in a header. In addition, names and dates could be included as well.
3) Number your pages sequentially beginning with the first page of World Lit 1 and running through the final reference page of World Lit 2.
4) Arrange the World Lit papers sequentially--with World Lit 1 coming first.
5) Clearly label each paper--at a minimum making sure that World Lit 2 is clearly labeled as either 2a (Comparative), 2b (Creative Response), or 2c (Literary Essay, Commentary, or Analysis of a Key Passage).
6) If the candidate has selected a creative response (2b), the candidate should place the "Statement of Intent" at the beginning of the assignment.

All quotations used must indicate provenance;  one convention is to indicate author and page number in parenthesis immediately after the quotation and this is perfectly acceptable. In addition, it is imperative that students provide clear evidence of which translation they have used and a bibliography is the simplest way to do this.

The word limit is 1000-1500 words but students are not to be penalised if they exceed these limits by 10 %.

The choices in 2(c) are usually between a close reading of a selected passage (commentary) and the examination of a key passage, showing how indeed it has a key role in the text(sometimes elucidated in the initial stages by looking at what would happen if it were subtracted from the work).

Certainly no outside sources are needed but they only become problematic when they swamp the students who rely on critics instead of developing their own personal responses.
